After a long and tough day on the slopes, your body needs proper care to recover and prepare for the next adventure.
Skiing demands a combination of strength, endurance, and balance, which can leave your muscles fatigued and your energy reserves depleted. Recovery isn’t just about rest—it’s also about replenishing your body with the nutrients it needs to repair, refuel, and thrive.
Fueling Your Recovery: Balanced Nutrition
Proper nutrition is the foundation of effective recovery. Before, during, and after skiing, you need balanced nutrition to give your body what it needs to repair muscle tissue, reduce inflammation, and restore energy stores.
Prioritize Protein for Muscle Repair
When we exercise, our muscles undergo micro-tears, and these micro-tears need to be repaired by eating enough protein and letting our body recover. Protein is essential for repairing the micro-tears in your muscles and by incorporating sources of protein such as chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, or Greek yogurt, aiming for 20-30 grams of protein within 1-2 hours of finishing your ski session this kickstarts the recovery process.
Complex Carbs for Energy Replenishment
Your glycogen stores (energy reserves in your muscles) take a hit after prolonged activity. Refuel with complex carbohydrates like quinoa, sweet potatoes, whole-grain pasta, or oats. These carbs provide a steady release of energy and help restore your glycogen levels, ensuring you’re ready for the next day on the slopes. Having quick sources of carbohydrates while you are skiing or riding like dried fruit, granola bars, or energy gus give your muscles quick energy so that your glycogen stores don't hit an empty tank.
Fight Inflammation with Antioxidants
Exercise, especially exercise that is prolonged and intense, like skiing or riding, can lead to muscle soreness and inflammation. Including anti-inflammatory foods and supplements in your recovery plan can help reduce these effects and promote faster healing.
Tart Cherry Juice: Tart cherry juice can help lessens pain and accelerates strength recovery after exercise and decreases blood markers of inflammation/oxidative stress. This is because it is rich in antioxidants and known for its anti-inflammatory properties, tart cherry juice can help reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time.
Pomegranate: High in polyphenols, pomegranate helps combat inflammation and supports overall muscle health.
Turmeric: A powerhouse spice with curcumin as its active ingredient, turmeric helps reduce inflammation and supports joint health. Pair it with black pepper for enhanced absorption.
Stay Hydrated: Water and Electrolytes
Hydration is critical after a day of skiing, especially if you’ve been sweating in your gear. Proper hydration aids in muscle function, nutrient delivery, and overall recovery.
Electrolytes Matter: Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium play a crucial role in fluid balance. Adding a pinch of salt to your water or consuming electrolyte-rich drinks can help your body retain water and prevent dehydration.
Drink Plenty of Water: Start with a glass of water immediately after skiing and continue hydrating throughout the evening.
Recovery Strategies Beyond Nutrition
While nutrition is a cornerstone of recovery, don’t forget to incorporate other strategies to optimize your post-ski routine:
Stretch or foam roll to relieve tension in tight muscles.
Though we all want to hop in the hot-tub, cold plunging is actually shown to improve muscle recovery due to the hydrostatic pressure from cold water immersion which helps clear uncomfortable fluid and lactic acid from the muscle tissue. Additionally, the cold water also helps slow inflammation and nerve responses.
Get a good night’s sleep to allow your body to fully recover. Sleep is so important because sleep stimulates growth hormones that stimulates tissue repair and build muscle.
